Description

Soft, slightly sweet, and pillowy — this beloved Amish-style loaf is perfect for toast or sandwiches.


Ingredients

2 cups warm water (110 °F / 43 °C)

  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • 1 ½ tbsp active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 6 cups bread flour


Instructions

  1. Dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water; rest 10 minutes.
  2. Stir in oil, salt, and half the flour; add remaining flour gradually.
  3. Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Let rise 1 hour; punch down, shape 2 loaves.
  5. Rise 30 minutes; bake at 350 °F (175 °C) for 30–35 minutes.

  • Brush tops with butter after baking for softness.
  • Freeze extra loaf once cooled.
