Description
Tender apple scones infused with warm cinnamon and baked to golden perfection, then drizzled with a sweet and smooth maple glaze. These cozy, buttery scones are ideal for fall mornings or a comforting breakfast treat.
Ingredients
Scones:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup diced apples (preferably Granny Smith)
- ½ cup cold butter, cut into pieces
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ½ cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking powder
Maple Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1–2 tsp milk, as needed to thin glaze
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s properly heated for baking the scones evenly.
- Prepare Dry Ingredients and Butter: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, cinnamon, and baking powder. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Apples and Wet Ingredients: Gently fold in the diced apples. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk, then pour this mixture into your flour and butter mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms—do not overmix to keep the scones tender.
- Shape Dough and Cut: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round disk about 1 inch thick. Using a sharp knife, cut the disk into 8 wedges.
- Bake the Scones: Place the wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until the scones are golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Prepare Maple Glaze: While the scones bake, whisk together the powdered sugar and maple syrup in a small bowl. Add milk 1 teaspoon at a time to achieve a drizzling consistency.
- Glaze the Scones: Once the scones have cooled slightly, drizzle the maple glaze generously over each scone and allow the glaze to set before serving.
Notes
- Granny Smith apples are preferred as their tartness complements the sweet glaze and holds up well in baking.
- For taller, fluffier scones, chill the dough for 15-30 minutes before baking.
- Do not overwork the dough to avoid tough scones.
- If desired, add a pinch of salt to the dry ingredients to balance sweetness.
- Store leftover scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
