Description
A rich and creamy baked French toast casserole layered with sweet blackberries and smooth ricotta cheese. This dish combines the softness of brioche bread with a flavorful custard soak, making it perfect for brunch gatherings or holiday mornings.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, cubed
- 1 cup fresh blackberries
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
Custard Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
For Serving
- Powdered sugar for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare dish. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Layer the bread and toppings. Spread half of the cubed brioche or challah bread evenly in the baking dish. Dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the bread and scatter fresh blackberries on top.
- Add remaining bread cubes. Cover the layers with the remaining bread cubes, creating a thick layer on top.
- Prepare the custard. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined and smooth.
- Soak the bread. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread in the dish. Allow it to sit and soak for about 10 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.
- Bake the casserole. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the surface is golden brown and the custard is fully set.
- Serve. Remove from the oven and dust with powdered sugar before serving warm. Optionally, serve with maple syrup for added sweetness.
Notes
- Assemble the casserole the night before, cover and refrigerate for overnight baking to enhance flavors and convenience.
