Traditionally served over toast, rice, or biscuits, this nostalgic family favorite is simple, hearty, and perfect for an easy weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
For the White Sauce and Chicken Mixture
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups cooked, diced chicken
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
For Serving
- Toast, rice, or biscuits
Instructions
- Melt the butter. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter completely to prepare for making the roux.
- Make the roux. Whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux and eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Cook the sauce. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and whole milk, making sure to stir continuously until the mixture is smooth and thickened into a creamy white sauce.
- Add chicken and peas. Stir in the cooked, diced chicken and frozen peas, mixing them evenly throughout the sauce.
- Season the dish. Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder (if using), adjusting the seasoning to taste.
- Simmer. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 5–7 minutes until everything is heated through and flavors meld perfectly.
- Serve. Serve the creamy chicken mixture warm over toast, rice, or biscuits for a comforting meal.
Notes
- Use rotisserie chicken for a quick, easy protein option.
- Add diced carrots or mushrooms to increase the vegetable content.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave to maintain the creamy texture without breaking the sauce.
