Description
A soft and fluffy cornbread with a tender crumb and lightly sweet flavor. This cornbread recipe is perfect as a comforting side dish alongside chili, barbecue, or simply enjoyed warm with butter and honey for a delicious treat.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup melted butter
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and grease an 8-inch baking pan to prevent the cornbread from sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and optional honey, ensuring the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
- Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined, taking care not to overmix to keep the cornbread tender.
- Pour Batter into Pan: Transfer the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top as needed.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cornbread to cool slightly in the pan before slicing into nine squares. Serve warm with butter or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- To make savory cornbread, reduce the sugar to 2 tablespoons for less sweetness.
- For added flavor, consider stirring in chopped jalapeños or shredded cheddar cheese before baking.
- This cornbread is best served warm to enjoy its moist and fluffy texture.
