Description
A cozy, old-fashioned hamburger potato casserole featuring tender, thinly sliced potatoes layered with savory ground beef and onions, all smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with melted cheddar cheese. This hearty and satisfying dish is perfect for a comforting family dinner.
Ingredients
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 lb ground beef
 - 1 small onion, diced
 - 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

Sauce and Toppings
- 1 can (10 oz) cream of mushroom soup
 - ½ cup milk
 - 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
 - Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
 - Cook Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the diced onion until fully cooked and fragrant. Drain off any excess fat to prevent greasiness.
 - Prepare Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup with the milk until smooth and well blended.
 - Layer Ingredients: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Start by layering the thinly sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom, followed by spreading the cooked ground beef and onion mixture over the potatoes. Pour the soup and milk mixture over the top to cover evenly.
 - Bake Covered: Cover the casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, allowing the potatoes to cook through and absorb flavors.
 - Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top, and return the casserole to the oven. Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.

Notes
- Add frozen peas for a splash of color and extra nutrition.
 - Try substituting cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken soup for a milder flavor profile.
