Description

Easy and flavorful homemade sloppy joes made with ground beef or turkey, simmered in a tangy-sweet sauce and piled high on soft hamburger buns. A classic American comfort food perfect for a quick and satisfying family meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, diced

Sauce

  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

To Serve

  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the Meat and Onion: Heat a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey along with the diced onion. Cook until the meat is fully browned and the onion is softened, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  2. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into the browned meat mixture. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
  3. Simmer the Mixture: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. Stir occasionally until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly.
  4. Assemble and Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the hamburger buns. Serve immediately, optionally toasting the buns beforehand for extra texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Add diced bell peppers or a dash of hot sauce to the meat mixture for a flavorful twist.
  • Toasting the hamburger buns before serving adds a delightful crunch and enhances the overall texture.
