Description
A comforting Middle Eastern drinkable pudding made from milk, sugar, and orange blossom water — thick, aromatic, and perfect for cold evenings.
Ingredients
Milk Mixture
- 3 cups milk
- 2 tbsp cornstarch (or traditional salep powder if available)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp orange blossom or rose water
Toppings
- Ground cinnamon for topping
- Chopped pistachios for topping
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a saucepan, whisk together the milk, cornstarch, and sugar until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps to ensure even cooking.
- Cook the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the mixture thickens into a creamy pudding consistency. This prevents lumps and burning.
- Add Flavorings: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and orange blossom or rose water to infuse the pudding with aromatic flavors.
- Serve: Pour the pudding into mugs or serving bowls. Sprinkle generously with ground cinnamon and chopped pistachios for added texture and taste. Serve warm for the best experience.
Notes
- Adjust sugar according to your taste preferences, especially if using salep powder which may affect sweetness.
- Serve warm to fully enjoy the traditional comforting texture and aroma of sahlab.
- If traditional salep powder is used instead of cornstarch, reduce the amount slightly as salep thickens more efficiently.
- Optionally, you can garnish with shredded coconut or dried rose petals for a more festive presentation.
