Ingredients
Vegetables
- 1 lb fresh asparagus
Seasonings and Oils
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Cheese and Herbs
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Asparagus: Wash the asparagus and pat it completely dry to remove any moisture which ensures proper air frying and crispiness.
- Trim Ends: Trim or snap off the tough woody ends of the asparagus to make sure each spear is tender and edible.
- Season Asparagus: Place the asparagus in a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil, then add minced garlic, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika if using. Toss everything until the asparagus is evenly coated with the seasonings.
- Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 2–3 minutes if your model requires preheating to ensure even cooking from the start.
- Arrange Asparagus: Arrange the asparagus in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If needed, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding and allow proper air circulation.
- Air Fry: Cook for 6–9 minutes at 400°F, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking process to promote even crisping. Adjust time based on thickness of asparagus spears.
- Add Parmesan: Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the asparagus during the last minute of cooking so it melts and browns lightly.
- Finish and Garnish: Remove the asparagus from the air fryer and immediately finish with fresh lemon juice and optional chopped parsley for brightness and freshness.
- Serve: Serve the asparagus warm as a side dish alongside your favorite main courses.
Notes
- Choose asparagus spears of similar thickness for even cooking.
- Thin asparagus may need only 5–6 minutes, while thicker spears may need 8–10 minutes.
- Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to ensure proper air circulation and crisping.
- For a dairy-free version, omit the Parmesan cheese or substitute with a dairy-free alternative.
- Add red pepper flakes for a little heat if desired.
- Freshly grated Parmesan melts best and adds superior flavor compared to pre-grated cheese.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes to restore crispiness.
