Description
A classic British comfort dish featuring juicy sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with rich onion gravy. This hearty meal combines savory flavors and smooth textures for a satisfying and traditional dinner.
Ingredients
Sausages and Mashed Potatoes
- 6 sausages
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Onion Gravy
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Boil Potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a pot of boiling salted water. Cook until tender when pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well.
- Mash Potatoes: Return the drained potatoes to the pot or a bowl, add butter and milk. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then set aside and keep warm.
- Cook Sausages: Heat a pan over medium heat and cook the sausages until browned on all sides and fully cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove sausages and keep warm.
- Sauté Onions: In the same pan, add oil if needed and sauté the sliced onions over medium heat until they become soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
- Prepare Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir, cooking briefly for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Adjust thickness with more broth if necessary.
- Assemble and Serve: Plate the creamy mashed potatoes, place sausages on top, and generously ladle the rich onion gravy over the sausages and mash. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use high-quality sausages for best flavor.
- Add mustard to the mash for extra depth and a slight tang.
- Adjust gravy thickness by adding more broth if it’s too thick.
