Description
Soft and chewy glutinous rice balls coated in a rich and aromatic brown sugar syrup, sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds for added texture. This traditional Asian dessert offers a warm, comforting treat with a perfect balance of sweetness and chewiness.
Ingredients
Rice Balls
- 1 cup glutinous rice flour
- 1/2 cup water
Brown Sugar Syrup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of glutinous rice flour with 1/2 cup of water. Stir and knead until a smooth, pliable dough forms. Cover the dough with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
- Shape the rice balls: Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into small, round balls about 1 inch in diameter.
- Cook the rice balls: Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Carefully drop the rice balls into the boiling water. Cook them until they float to the surface, indicating they are cooked through, which should take about 3-5 minutes.
- Drain: Using a slotted spoon, remove the cooked rice balls from the water and drain well.
- Make the brown sugar syrup: In a pan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves fully and the mixture thickens slightly to form a syrup.
- Coat the rice balls: Add the cooked rice balls into the brown sugar syrup and gently toss to coat them evenly with the syrup.
- Garnish and serve: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds over the syrup-coated rice balls and serve warm for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Keep the dough covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out and cracking.
- Serve the rice balls immediately after coating with syrup to enjoy the best chewy texture.
- Toast sesame seeds lightly for enhanced aroma before sprinkling.
- You can adjust the sweetness of the syrup by adding more or less brown sugar according to your taste.
