Ingredients
Meat and Soup Base
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 packet French onion soup mix
- ½ cup beef broth
Pasta and Dairy
- 12 oz egg noodles
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz)
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready once your casserole is assembled.
- Cook Noodles: Prepare the egg noodles according to the package directions until al dente, then drain well to prevent excess moisture in the casserole.
- Brown Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess grease for a leaner dish.
- Add Seasoning: Stir in the French onion soup mix and beef broth to the browned beef. Let it simmer for about 3 minutes so the flavors meld together.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, cooked noodles, and the beef mixture. Mix thoroughly to create a creamy, flavorful filling.
- Assemble Casserole: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and transfer the mixture evenly into it. Spread it out smoothly for even baking.
- Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and Swiss cheeses evenly over the top of the casserole for a rich and melty crust.
- Add Butter Dots: Dot the top of the cheese layer with small pieces of butter to add richness and help the cheese brown nicely.
- Bake: Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes to set before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- Gruyère cheese can be used instead of Swiss cheese for a more authentic French onion flavor.
- Fresh parsley makes a lovely garnish to add color and freshness.
- This casserole can be prepared ahead and frozen before baking for up to 2 months—just thaw before baking.
