Description

These homemade Sloppy Joes feature lean ground beef simmered in a rich, tangy tomato sauce with onions, peppers, and classic seasonings. Served on toasted hamburger buns, they’re a family-friendly meal that’s ready in just 30 minutes and perfect for a quick, satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • ½ green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

To Serve

  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil: Warm 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat to prepare for sautéing the vegetables.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: Add the finely diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until they become soft and fragrant.
  3. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds to release its aroma without burning.
  4. Cook the beef: Add the lean ground beef to the skillet. Cook until it is fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat if necessary to keep the dish lean.
  5. Combine sauce ingredients: Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly coat the beef and vegetables.
  6. Simmer the mixture: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes to thicken and develop flavor.
  7. Prepare buns and serve: Toast the hamburger buns lightly. Spoon the thickened Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve immediately for a warm, hearty meal.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can be used as a leaner alternative to beef.
  • Adding shredded cheddar cheese on top gives extra richness and flavor.
  • Any leftover filling freezes well for convenient future meals.
