Description
A soft and hearty loaf made with oats and sweetened with honey, this wholesome honey oat bread is perfect for sandwiches, breakfast toast, or everyday baking. The combination of rolled oats and honey adds natural sweetness and texture, while the bread’s tender crumb and slightly sweet crust make it irresistible.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 3 cups (360g) bread flour
- 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
- 2¼ tsp (7g) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
- ¼ cup (60ml) warm water
- ¼ cup (85g) honey
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a medium bowl, combine the warm water, warm milk, honey, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is active.
- Mix dough: Add softened butter, salt, rolled oats, and 2 cups of the bread flour to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine thoroughly.
- Form dough: Gradually add the remaining flour, a little at a time, mixing continuously until a soft dough forms that is slightly sticky but manageable.
- Knead dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
- First rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape the loaf: Punch down the risen dough to release air, then shape it into a loaf. Place the shaped dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Second rise: Cover the loaf pan and let the dough rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until it has risen just above the edge of the pan. Optionally, sprinkle additional rolled oats on top for texture and appearance.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 35 to 40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
- For enhanced flavor, lightly toast the rolled oats before adding them to the dough.
- Brush the top of the bread with honey butter right after baking for a softer, glossier crust.
- This bread keeps well for several days when stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
