Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
For the Filling:
- 1/3 cup sugar
- Zest of 2 lemons
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let this mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make the Dough: Add sugar, egg, melted butter, and flour to the yeast mixture. Mix all ingredients well and knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes soft and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare Filling and Roll Dough: Roll out the risen dough into a rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface. Mix the sugar and lemon zest, then sprinkle this lemon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Shape Rolls: Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the rolled dough into 8 equal slices to form individual rolls.
- Second Rise: Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish. Cover them and let them rise again for about 20 minutes until they puff up.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and are cooked through.
- Glaze: While the rolls are still warm, whisk together powdered sugar and lemon juice to make a tangy glaze. Drizzle the glaze generously over the warm rolls before serving.
Notes
- Add cream cheese to the glaze for a richer, creamier finish.
- These rolls are best served warm for optimal softness and flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to 2 days.
