Ingredients
Proteins
- 1 pound ground beef
Vegetables
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Dairy
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter
Others
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the skillet: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
- Cook the ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
- Sauté the vegetables: Add the sliced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms to the browned beef. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender and lightly browned.
- Add garlic and seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Then add Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and cook for another minute to meld flavors.
- Layer the cheese: Evenly spread the beef and vegetable mixture across the skillet. Arrange the slices of provolone cheese over the top.
- Melt the cheese: Cover the skillet briefly with a lid or foil for 2-3 minutes, until the provolone cheese melts and becomes gooey.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from heat, garnish with fresh chopped parsley, and serve hot on its own, over rice, mashed potatoes, or in toasted hoagie rolls for a sandwich-style meal.
Notes
- Use shaved steak instead of ground beef for a more authentic cheesesteak texture.
- Substitute provolone with American or mozzarella cheese if preferred.
- Add sliced jalapeños, banana peppers, or crushed red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
- Diced cooked potatoes can be added for extra heartiness.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheat gently.
- You can freeze the beef and vegetable mixture separately; add fresh cheese when reheating.
- Serve with a green salad, roasted potatoes, fries, or toasted rolls for a complete meal.
