Description

A classic British comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef or lamb cooked with vegetables, layered with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden and bubbling, perfect for a hearty family meal.

Ingredients

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Topping

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the assembled shepherd’s pie.
  2. Cook the meat and base ingredients. In a skillet, cook the ground beef or lamb along with chopped onion and minced garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Add vegetables and season. Stir in the mixed peas and carrots, tomato paste, and pour in the beef broth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Simmer the filling. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly and develop deep flavors.
  5. Assemble in a baking dish. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture into an even layer in a baking dish.
  6. Add the mashed potato topping. Spread the prepared mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture, covering it completely. Dot the surface with small pieces of butter to help achieve a golden crust.
  7. Bake the shepherd’s pie. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the mashed potato top is golden brown and slightly crispy.
  8. Cool and serve. Allow the shepherd’s pie to cool slightly before serving to let the layers set and to avoid burns.

Notes

  • Traditionally made with lamb; beef is a popular and accessible alternative.
  • Adding shredded cheese to the mashed potato topping can enhance flavor and create a delicious crust.
