Description

A rich and hearty slow cooker casserole made with tender steak, creamy potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese. This comforting dish is perfect for hands-off cooking and satisfying family meals, combining savory flavors and a creamy texture for an easy yet delicious meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 500 g steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream or milk

Liquids and Seasonings

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Layer the first half: Place half of the thinly sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add half of the steak pieces scattered evenly on top of the potatoes. Next, layer the sliced onions and sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over everything.
  3. Layer the second half: Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, steak, onions, and cheese, creating another even layer on top of the first.
  4. Mix the cooking liquid: In a bowl, combine the beef broth, cream or milk, minced garlic, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to incorporate all ingredients.
  5. Pour over layers: Slowly pour the liquid mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the slow cooker. This will help to cook and flavor the casserole thoroughly.
  6. Cook the casserole: Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on low heat for 6 to 7 hours, or on high heat for 3 to 4 hours. The cooking time depends on your slow cooker and preferred tenderness.
  7. Check for doneness: Before serving, test the potatoes with a fork to ensure they are tender and fully cooked through.
  8. Rest and serve: Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes after cooking to allow it to set and improve texture. Serve warm and enjoy the hearty flavors.

Notes

  • Use a well-marbled cut of steak to ensure tenderness and rich flavor.
  • Add mushrooms or bell peppers to the layers for extra flavor and texture variety.
  • Allow the casserole to rest after cooking for better texture and easier serving.
