Description

These soft dinner rolls are light, fluffy, and buttery, making them the perfect addition to holiday meals, family dinners, or everyday baking. Their tender crumb and golden crust deliver a comforting homemade bread experience that’s easy to prepare and sure to impress.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3½ cups (420g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (50g) sugar
  • 2¼ tsp (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • Melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast in a bowl. Stir gently and let it stand for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: To the yeast mixture, add the egg, softened unsalted butter, and salt. Mix together until fully combined.
  3. Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour into the wet ingredients while mixing, until a soft dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, which develops the gluten structure.
  5. First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough, divide it into 12 equal portions, and shape each into a smooth ball.
  7. Prepare for Second Rise: Arrange the dough balls evenly in a greased baking dish, cover, and allow them to rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.
  8. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18–22 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the rolls sound hollow when tapped.
  9. Butter Brush Finish: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush them with melted butter to add a rich flavor and soft crust.

Notes

  • Use bread flour instead of all-purpose for extra soft and chewy rolls.
  • After baking, rolls can be frozen in an airtight container and reheated when needed.
  • For added flavor, brush with garlic butter instead of plain melted butter.
